What to Wear in Buffalo When the WNY Weather is Acting Ridiculous
If you live in Buffalo, you already know the rule: You don’t dress for the day. You dress for the day plus three unpredictable weather conditions that might show up later. Today it was 80 degrees, sunny, and feeling like summer finally decided to stay. And now? The sun dipped down, the wind shifted, and here I am sitting in 40-degree air wondering why I trusted that forecast. Welcome to Buffalo! Everyone always wonders why my favorite article of clothing is an oversized gym hoodie. I'll tell you why. Because Buffalo style hits differently. It’s not just fashion over here: It’s survival of the elements plus some added personality.   The Buffalo Weather Problem (aka: Why You Always Need a Backup Layer) The entire month of May is the perfect example of this chaos I'm describing. So far this week I've had: Heat on Heat off Heat off, windows open A/C on A/C off, windows open Windows closed Windows closed, heat on Today, on a particularly warm afternoon where I went out for an hour-long bike ride in Orchard Park, it now turned into a chilly night where I’m questioning my outfit decisions from this morning. This is where most people go wrong: shorts and a t-shirt all day freezing at night regretting everything Buffalo locals? We don’t play like that. We always layer. We’re prepared. The Day-to-Night Outfit Rule For Springtime in Buffalo If you're from Cheektowaga, Hamburg, Tonawanda, Amherst, Clarence, East Aurora, Northtowns, Southtowns, or anywhere near these Great Lakes, you know what I'm talking about! If you’re from Buffalo, you know the weather could go either way that day, so here’s the rules: ☀️Afternoon (70–80°F) Start light: graphic tee relaxed fit denim or shorts sneakers But always plan for the shift. Because it’s coming. Neither you nor I are getting out of this. ❄️Evening Drop (30-40°F reality check) This is where Buffalo does what Buffalo does best: It just dropped 30 degrees in an hour and now I’m cold! Time to add: a hoodie or sweatshirt lightweight jacket if needed maybe a hat if the wind kicks up possible socks with sandals (my personal favorite!) This is not optional. This is Buffalo. And this is where a solid piece of Buffalo apparel becomes essential. A comfy hoodie or crewneck isn’t just comfort. It’s an essential backup plan when the temperature decides to fall 30 degrees without asking permission.  The “Buffalo Uniform” Every local has it. It looks something like this: breathable base layer (tee or tank) cozy hoodie or crewneck sweatshirt hat for unpredictable breeze It’s simple, but it works every single time. You must have these things when the weather turns... and it's totally acceptable to tie the sweatshirt around your waist or leave the hoodie in the car til you need it, but you must have it on the ready! Hoodie Weather Is Basically a Buffalo Season Here’s something outsiders don’t understand: In Buffalo, hoodie season is not fall or winter. It’s a year-round thing. That’s why pieces like a fleece-lined hoodie or a cozy sweatshirt are the most reliable items you can own here. They’re not just for cold weather. They're for: late nights walking the dog post-sunset bonfires stadium nights Netflix and chill nights   What to Wear When You Want Comfort Without Losing Style This is where Buffalo fashion gets interesting. You want something that works in both: daylight warmth nighttime chill That means: oversized hoodies with cool graphics bold statement sweatshirts layered tees that still look good under outerwear This is also where a well-designed Buffalo-themed hoodie or sweatshirt becomes more than just clothing: It becomes your go-to uniform for more than half the year. 👉 Shop Buffalo Hoodies Collection   Game Day Greatness, Even When It’s Not Game Day Since this layering rule applies year-round, don't be afraid to rock a sports team shirt even when it's no longer football or hockey season. In Buffalo, style often carries that game-day energy even when there’s no game happening. It’s the pride. The attitude. The loyalty. A hoodie with bold Buffalo hockey design, or a cozy football sweatshirt layered under a jacket, fits right into that lifestyle, whether you’re headed to Wegmans, to the lake, or just grabbing coffee down on Elmwood Ave. 👉 Shop Buffalo Sweatshirts   Final Thoughts: Dress for the Shift, Not the Moment Buffalo weather teaches you one thing quickly: Never trust the current temperature. Always think ahead. Because the difference between comfort and regret is usually just one hoodie away. And once you start dressing for Buffalo correctly, you realize something: It’s not about fighting the weather. It’s about adapting to it in style. Welcome to Buffalo State of Mind. Stay warm out there, Buffalo.  ♥ Shannon
